Cercariae of Clonorchis sinensis were attempted to penetrate into various fry of fresh water fishes in order to examine the conditions of infection and the further development in the fish. The following conclusions were made. Cercariae of C. sinensis penetrated into the muscle of the fry of Pseudorasbora parva were found to be able to develop. Cercariae penetrated into the fry of Pseudorasbora parva migrated into the organs of the fry to kill their host. From each dead individual of P. parva, more than 10 larvae of C. sinensis could be discovered. Cercariae attached on the Cyprinus carpio, Carassius and gold fish were almost killed before penetration into the body and even one or two cercariae penetrated were also killed as time passed. Cercariae of C. sinensis infected on the fry of Cyprinus Carpio, Carassius auratus and gold fish could not survive more than 60 days. Cercariae penetrated into Cyprinus carpio and Carassius auratus could not develop into complete metacercariae even after 3O days. Cercariae of Clonorchis sinensis penetrated into the fry of Aplocheilus latipes were killed within 10 hours and the cercariae attached on the caudal fin were destroyed in 2 hours. It was found that no cercariae of Clonorchis sinensis could penetrate into the body of the fry of Misgurnus anguillicaudatus.

The author reported in the previous pager on his observation of sudden death of Clonorchis sinensis cercaria before penetration into the body of fry such as Cyprinus carpio and Carassius auratus. And in these studies, the reason behind the fact was investigated and it was found that the mucous substances on the surface of a certain fishes have a strong wormicidal effect to the larva of C. sinensis. When cercariae of C. sinensis were immersed into the mucous substance of gold fish for three minutes 36 seconds to 4 minutes 20 seconds, into that of Aplocheilus latipes for 4 minutes 30 seconds to 5 minutes 20 seconds, into that of Cyprinus carpio for 5 minutes 15 seconds to 6 minutes l6 seconds, and into that of Carassius auratus for 5 minutes 20 seconds to 7 minutes 30 seconds, it was observed that they were all killed. No wormicidal effect against C. sinensis could be observed with the mucous substance obtained from Pseudorasbora parva, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus and Ophicephalus argus. No wormicidal effect against Metagonimus sp. cercaria is observed with the mucous substance obtained from Cyprinus carpio, Carassius auratus. The wormicidal effect of the mucous substances obtained from gold fish was destroyed when heated over 60 C. The movements of metacercaria of C. sinensis stopped after 10 minutes application of the mucous substance obtained from Cyprinus carpio and they were killed within 30 minutes. When the adult worms collected from the bile duct of experimentally infected rabbits for 20 to 60 days, were immersed into mucous substance from Cyprinus carpio, they were killed between 25 minutes and 35 minutes. No wormicidal effect could be observed with the mucous substance obtained from dead Cyprinus carpio, Carassius auratus, gold fish, when applied to the adult worms and larvae of C. sinensis.

A comparison of the absorption and incorporation of C(14)-proline into protein by the 7 kinds of helminth parasites is presented. The radioactivity of free amino acid fraction is greater than that of protein fraction in all the worms, and only a small amount of exogenous labeled proline is incorporated into tissue protein. In general, the pattern of C(14)-proline uptake and its incorporation into protein shows rapid linear increase during the period of 15 to 30 min and reaches the maximum at 60 min after incubation, and then the equilibrium state was maintained throughout further incubation.

Direct contact method of autoradiography was utilized in studying the distribution of exogenous C(14)-proline in Clonorchis sinensis, Eurytrema pancreaticum, Hymenolepis diminuta and Dipylidium caninum. The most distinct autoradiogram were obtained after 60 min of incubation, corresponding to the maximal absorption of C(14)-proline in these parasite. The radioactivitity of this labeled amino acid was chiefly concentrated in reproductive organs, especially egg-containing uterine tubules.

Metabolism of C14-glucose by Fasciola hepatica
Seo, Byong Seol , Rim, Han Jong , Kim, Kwang Soo , Rhee, Sang Don , Lim, Sun Jo , Lee, Wha Suk
Korean J Parasitol 1964;2(3):170-174.
DOI: https://doi.org/10.3347/kjp.1964.2.3.170
The glucose uptake rate by Fasciola hepatica was a mean value of 9.62 +/- 0.54 micro-mole/hr/g, and total CO(2) production rate by the flukes averaged 24.28 +/- 4.26 micro-mole/hr/g wet wt. The relative specific activity of respiratory CO(2) showed a mean value of 79.89 +/- 1.78 per cent. The rate of CO(2) production derived from medium C(14)-glucose was a mean of 19.55 +/- 3.56 micro-mole/hr/g of we wt. Therefore, the average value of 32.72 +/- 4.8 percent of glucose utilized by the flukes from the medium C(14)-glucose was oxidized to respiratory CO(2). The tissue concentration of glycogen in F. hepatica was a mean of 38.36 +/- 2.91 mg/g or 3.84 +/- 0.29 %/g of wet wt, and the turnover rate of glycogen pool was a mean of 1.6+/-0.22 %/hr or 0.65 +/- 0.13 mg/hr/g. The average value of 37.26 +/- 3.86 per cent of glucose utilized by the fluke from the medium C(4)-glucose was incorporated to the glycogen. These data account for that approximately 70 per cent of the utilized glucose by the flukes participated in furnishing the oxidation into respiratory CO(2) and the synthetic process into glycogen.

Metabolism of C14-glucose by Eurytrema pancreaticum
Seo, Byong Seol , Rim, Han Jong , Kim, Kwang Soo , Lee, Myung Sang , Kim, Yeong Uhn , Song, Hi Yong
Korean J Parasitol 1964;2(3):175-178.
DOI: https://doi.org/10.3347/kjp.1964.2.3.175
The glucose uptake rate by Eurytrema pancreaticum was a mean value of 16.44 +/- 2.42 micro-mole/hr/g, and total CO(2) production rate by the fluke averaged 5.82 +/- 0.97 micro-mole/hr/g. The relative specific activity of respiratory CO(2) showed a mean value of 5.75 +/- 0.84 per cent. The rate of CO(2) production derived from medium C(14)-glucose was a mean of 0.33 +/- 0.10 micor-mole/hr/g. Therefore, the average value of 0.32 +/- 0.04 per cent of glucose utilized by the flukes from the medium C(14)-glucose was oxidized to respiratory CO(2). The tissue concentration of glycogen in E. pancreaticum was a mean of 45.50 +/- 2.18 mg/g or 4.55 +/- 0.22 %/g. But the turnover rate of glycogen pool was a mean of 0.027 +/- 0.003 %/hr or 0.009 +/- 0.002 mg/hr/g. The average value of 0.64 +/- 0.23 percent of glucose utilized by the flukes from the medium C(14)-glucose was incorporated into the glycogen. These data account for that only 1 per cent of the utilized glucose by the flukes participated in furnishing the oxidation into respiratory CO(2) and the synthetic process into glycogen.

A Case report of sparganosis
Seo, Byong Seol , Rim, Han Jong , Yoon, Jong June , Lee, Dong June
Korean J Parasitol 1964;2(3):179-182.
DOI: https://doi.org/10.3347/kjp.1964.2.3.179
A case of sparganosis was presented. The patient was a 43-year-old Korean male who had a history of having eaten raw flesh of snake and frog in Keoje Island during 1950 to 1952 for the purpose of treatment of arthritis by the oriental custom. In the summer, l959, he had slight itching sensation in the left lower scrotal area. A few months later, he noticed the appearance of a peanut-sized mass in that area. However, the mass enlarged gradually to a hen's egg size during two years. On surgical exploration, the mass was found to be a fibro-connective tissue capsule(3 to 4 cm in diameter) in the lower left scrotal area. From the capsule three larvae(l9 to 28 cm by 2 to 6 mm) were freed by dissection without much difficulty. The sources of infection of some formerly reported sparganosis in Korea were discussed. It is most probable that human sparganosis is acquired by ingestion of raw flesh of snake and frog in this country.

Field survey on the freshwater snails in Cheju Province(Quelpart lsland), Korea: Especially on presence or not of Parafossarulus manchouricus
Kang, Suck Young , Loh, In Kyu , Park, Yung Hoon , Kim, Byung Chan , Lim, Too Bong
Korean J Parasitol 1964;2(3):183-188.
DOI: https://doi.org/10.3347/kjp.1964.2.3.183
The question of infectivity and prevalence of Clonorchis sinensis in Cheju province (Quelpart Island) was arisen to authors since the several surveys on the endemic diseases were performed in this island. Therefore, authors decided to solute this question. Then the survey on the possible second intermediate host of Clonorchis sinensis was performed and reported already with negative finding. At present time, authors carried out the collection of all kinds of fresh-water snails through all areas of this island, to confirm the presence or not of Parafossarulus manchouricus, the only first intermediate host of Clonorchis sinensis in Korea . And the following results were obtained. The fresh-water snails collected in the survey were Semisulcospira libertina Gould and Lymnaea ollula Gould. Parafossarulus manchouricus Bourguigant was not collected in this island. It is confirmed that the Clonorchis sinensis can not be prevalent in this island.

Authors carried out the survey for human paragonimiasis in Ko-Hoong County, Chun-Nam Province, Korea from July to September 1964 by the use of intradermal screening test with Veronal buffered saline antigen. Eight myuns (village) out of 13 myuns of this county were selected for the survey, regarding balanced selection. The number of 2,916 primary school children of high class and 764 residents of all age groups in these areas were examined (total 3,680; male 1,961; female 1,719). The following results were obtained in this survey. As a whole, 20.1 per cent of the examiners showed positive reaction, with sexual difference of 20.9 per cent in male and 19.1 per cent in female. In regional differences of positive rate, the highest rate(50.1 per cent) was showed at Po-Doo myun and lowest rate(3.6 per cent) was showed at Do-Yang myun. In age group, the highest positive rate was showed in 16 to 20 age group (46.7 per cent). In regional comparison of paragonimiasis infectivity of whole nation (province and county), Ko-Hoong County as nearly same as the Hea-Nam County, Chun-Nam Province follows next of Cheju Province, the highest prevalance area of paragonimiasis in Korea, in concentration of prevalence of paragonimiasis.
