Fig. 1 Haematoxylin-eosin staining of the Giardia infected Mongolian gerbil's tissue. Trophozoites of Giardia (arrow heads) are present as free or attached forms to the microvilli of the intestine (×200).
Fig. 2 Growth curves of Giardia WB and K1. Cultures of inoculation with 104 cells were taken out at every 24 hr and counted on a haemocytometer. According to the equation of Boreham et al. (1984), generation times for WB and K1 were 14.2 and 14.3 hr, respectively.
Fig. 3 Nucleotide sequences of the 292 bp region of SSU-rDNA. The sequences of the four groups described by Hopkins et al. (1997) (G1-G4) were compared to those of two Giardia isolates, K1 and K2. Asterisks (*) indicates the identical sequence while - represents the deletion.
Fig. 4 PCR-RFLP analysis of two tim gene fragments. Lane 1, 3 and 5, XhoI digest of WB, K1 and K2 DNA amplified with primers 4131 and 4130; lane 2, 4 and 6, HindIII digest of WB, K1 and K2 DNA amplified with primers 7493 and 5945; lane 7, 100 bp ladder.
